New Pat Matthews commits to D3 SUNY-Canton
Toronto, ON - Toronto Patriots defender Kyler Matthews has committed to play Division III hockey for the State University of New York at Canton for the 2018-19 in the SUNYAC Conference, the club announced Friday.
Matthews, 20, was acquired by the Pats at the 2018 Ontario Junior Hockey League Trade Deadline (Jan. 9) from the Mississauga Chargers, and has fit in very well thus far, posting two points in three games – all Toronto victories.
A native of Alliston, ON, Matthews has appeared in 142 OJHL games, all but three of which with the Chargers. He has amassed 11 goals, 66 points, and 240 penalty minutes over that span.
Matthews made Mississauga out of the Alliston-based TNT Tornados Midget AA in 2014-15.
He was named captain of the Chargers this past off-season.
Matthews becomes the fourth Patriot to commit to an NCAA program so far this season, and the second in a week as Lee Lapid confirmed his intention to attend Canisius College on Jan. 17.
